KZN govt was not warned of July unrest, Zikalala claims

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala says the provincial government was given no warnings before the July unrest.

Zikalala's gave evidence before the South African Human Rights Commission's hearings into the July riots on Friday morning.
"No briefing had ever warned of the impending large scale events that took place during July 2021.
"It is also worth reporting that the province didn't have at that time have a head of state security agency. So there was no head in the province and there was nothing provided to us."
He says they only received information on the 11th of July that pertained to the violence linked to some people's unhappiness over the jailing of former president Jacob Zuma.
He says during the unrest he approached the presidency, which announced it would deploy the army to KZN, but there was no sign of the military for a while.
He also drew attention to an under-resourced police force.
