KZN govt wants justice for Lindani Myeni

KZN authorities have urged the US government to ensure there is justice for Lindani Myeni.

The 29-year-old former KZN rugby player was shot and killed by police in Hawaii last month.


There was an apparent scuffle between him and police following reports of an alleged burglary. The Honululu Police Department claims he was violent.

The remains of the Richards Bay-born father of two arrived in the country on Saturday. 


Social Development MEC, Nonhlanhla Khoza was among the government officials who joined Myeni's family and friends at OR Tambo International Airport.


She says the killing of black people at the hands of police in the US is an sad indictment on Americans. 


"It is a sad indictment on Americans that their country continues to be associated with the senseless murder of black people by their police. 


"The callous murder of our son has, if anything, has diminished the little hope that there will be a sudden change in police attitudes after the globally reported murder of George Floyd and his conviction. 


"For our part as the province of KwaZulu-Natal and as South Africans, we will refuse that uMdolomba, uMzukase, u Mnguni wasenhla becomes another statistic in the long list of black men and black women who are murdered by America in what is supposed to be the land of the free."
