KZN, Gauteng register highest GBV-related cases

KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng have recorded the highest number of gender-based violence cases.
This is according to the latest police crime stats released by Police Minister Bheki Cele on Tuesday.
He said there was a 21.5% increase in the attempted murder of women in the first three months of the year.
KZN recorded 2 573 reported rape cases.

Cele said a lot has been done to curb these crimes, like improving DNA testing.
"You must remember that this backlog of 241 000 that has been reduced to 600, and all of those cases that have been stagnated on the DNA have been pushed to the criminal justice system so that those cases can be tried."
He added that more than 7 000 sex offenders have been slapped with life sentences.
