KZN funeral practitioners frustrated at delays in processing claims

The KZN Funeral Practitioners Association says there have been some delays in the processing of claims related to the Motsepe Foundation.

This has lead to a halt of some funerals of those who died in the KZN floods and an influx of bodies in their mortuaries.

The Motsepe Foundation donated some R30 million to assist with the payment of funerals of those who lost family members.

The association’s chairperson Nomdundo Mcoyi says the process is taking too long.

"Apparently we have got to submit a list with Motsepe and submit a list with the municipality, then they have to verify those lists.

“It's a very long and tedious process that we have to go through. We are sitting with bodies, the bodies of the flood victims, they have been sitting for days. They did not pass on naturally, they passed on by drowning, the bodies are not in a good state."

eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela says the funeral parlour needs to be a legally registered company that is tax compliant and has a business bank account.

He says a letter from the ward councillor stating that they have made an assessment to ascertain financial need is needed.

A death certificate and details of the funeral parlour are also needed.

"The benefit will be paid directly to the funeral parlour of the family's choice."
