KZN fire season in full swing, warns Working on Fire
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
With KwaZulu-Natal's winter fire season in full swing, local fire teams are urging landowners to be prepared.
"We've had a really good rainy season in the summer and we had a really good rainy season in the previous summer as well," says Working on Fire's Simon Thomas.
"So what you got at the moment is that you've got very high fuel loads which will exacerbate and cause the spread of fire if people are not careful on the use of fire."
Thomas says they are advising communities living in fire-prone areas to take the necessary precautions to reduce the risk of runaway blazes.

These flames have been known to be fanned by strong Berg winds and cold front gusts.
He says because of the recent heavy rains, grass and bushes have grown thicker than usual, providing more fuel to feed the fire.
"The long-term forecast is indicating that we will see warmer day-time temperatures and cooler night-time temperatures. If people are not careful with fire and do not start fires that they cannot stop, then we could end up in a very disastrous situation."
