KZN Education warned to pay schools’ financial allocations on time
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal has been urged to make sure schools receive their financial allocations on time in future.
On Monday, the department announced that all schools in the province had received their Norms and Standards Allocations due to them in this last financial year.
The funds are meant to ensure the smooth running and functionality of schools.
Last November, the teachers union SADTU in KZN threatened a strike over school funding and other issues concerning teachers in the province.
The mass action was called off when the National Treasury stepped in to help the department with funds.

The union's provincial spokesperson, Nomarashiya Caluza, says teaching and learning are impacted when schools don't receive government funds on time.
Caluza says principals, teachers and school governing bodies that have been digging into their own pockets to keep their schools afloat can breathe a sigh of relief.
"Now the principals have to claim back those monies that they used, and in some schools, tensions will now emerge as people will say principals are spending the school's money, forgetting that all this time principals have been using their money. We are saying they must have the documentation to support the claim that they will be making."
