KZN Education says it’s rushing to put measures in place in schools damaged by the recent floods before schools open next week.
Disruptive thunderstorms and heavy rains battered the province during the festive season, flooding several towns, including Ladysmith and Newcastle.
According to local government authorities, at least 40 people have died in storm related incidents since 1 December.
Five people are still missing.

Provincial education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi says they are still looking at what's needed and where.
"Some schools are drastically affected, some partially affected. So, we are working around the clock to see which schools will need mobile classrooms, which schools will need drastic attention of ours before we open schools, but we can say the situation is dire in the area of Uthugela.”
