KZN education heads to school near Toti following recent deaths
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
KZN Education officials are making their way to a high school near Amanzimtoti - following disturbing reports about drugs and deaths.
"We are going to be monitoring there because the school is literally closed," Education MEC, Mthandeni Dlungwana said.
Teaching at Masakhaneni High was halted for two weeks after two pupils died after a fight over a phone in August.
Then, some 17 educators were axed after allegations of sexual abuse. There were also reports that teachers were selling drugs to children.
After the disruptions, the school organised a boot camp for matrics, to make sure they will be ready for their final exams.

But Grade 12 pupil, Mxolisi Mzulwini, tragically died after he attended the learning camp. Education MEC, Mthandeni Dlungwana says they'll be heading to Masakhaneni to make sure that the matrics are coping.
"There are a number of things that we intervened on. We want to see learners working and catching up with the academic programme. We are going there to monitor their [exam] writing and what the mood of our learners is," he said.
