KZN cops accused of multiple murders including ANC councillor

Two KwaZulu-Natal policemen, charged with the murder of an ANC ward councillor in eThekwini and three other people, are planning on asking for bail next week.

Mayendran Chetty and Thanduxolo Phelago appeared before the Scottburgh Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of murdering Cyril Nzimande and Yelo Buthelezi in August. 


They've also been accused of robbery with aggravating circumstances and the unlawful possession of a firearm. 


"They were remanded into custody and their matter returns to court on 25 November 2022, for a bail application," says KZN NPA spokesperson Natasha Kara.

Kara says Chetty and Phelago will return to court on Thursday in a separate investigation into the murders of councillor Mnqobi Molefe and Zitha Cele.


"Chetty and Phelago were also charged with two counts of murder in the Port Shepstone area, where they are alleged to have killed ward councillor, Mnqobi Molefe and another person Zitha Mqapheli Cele. 


"This matter returns to court on 18 November 2022, as it was previously remanded for them to get attorneys."
