KZN cannibalism: Seventh suspect arrested

Crowds of angry residents have gathered outside the Estcourt Magistrates Court where seven men - suspected of cannibalism - are due to appear.

Police say the seventh suspect was arrested this morning.  


Since the last court appearance of the other six - police have identified one victim, Zanele Hlatswayo, from the rural Shayamoya area.

The men have all abandoned their bid for bail. These residents are calling for justice.


"We are just here to protect people against cannibalism that is happening in our area especially in Ward 18, in the Esigodlweni area," one resident says. 


"We feel very bad to hear that this is happening in other provinces like the North West and the Eastern Cape," another resident says.  


Last month, four men including a traditional healer were arrested after one of them walked into the Estcourt police station.

Officers say he confessed to the crimes. Two other suspects were nabbed later.  


Investigators who had searched the traditional healer's home found body parts. 


The evidence was used to identify Hlatswayo.
