A six-year-old boy has drowned while on a school excursion near Shaka's Kraal on the north coast.

The boy had been on a raft on a dam with seven other pupils at the time.
IPSS Medical Rescue's Paul Herbst says three of the children fell overboard.

"The guides slipped into the water and managed to get two of the pupils out but unfortunately the third person went underwater. The pupil was found and brought out. CPR was started by bystanders and on arrival administered by paramedics.
"Advanced life support intervention was initiated and unfortunately the child was declared dead a short while later. Police are currently on scene doing the investigation," he says.
Herbst says the boy had been underwater for some time.
"It's believed he was under water for about 10 minutes, it could have been longer, until another bystander and the guide got him out the water," he says.
