KZN blood shortage: 'Emergency procedures top priority list'

The SA National Blood Service says all minor surgeries and procedures have been put on hold because of the critical shortage of blood.

Nationally, there are just over 1,400 units of blood available instead of the recommended 3,000 units.

These are being used for emergencies and life-saving operations only.

The service's Sifiso Khoza says donors with the universal blood type or Group O need to donate to lift stocks to healthy levels.

"Every single day of the week we have more than 25 mobile clinics in KZN. We are going to be operating from 9am to 5pm. If people do come at 5pm we are obviously not going to chase them away," he says.
