Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
KZN is among five provinces that have completed the marking of matric exam scripts.
The Basic Education Department has provided a progress update on the marking process.
It says over 2400 markers nationally withdrew from the process, with 70% of them being replaced.
National Examinations Director, Priscilla Ogunbanjo, says a total of 312 markers contracted the coronavirus.
"We did have some fatalities and you can see the numbers, KZN - 3, Gauteng 1 marker died, Limpopo-1 and Western Cape-1 and the DBE centralised marking centre also 1."

"But if you look at the total numbers which come to 0.7% of the markers we have said that the numbers that have tested positive are not alarmingly high for that we are grateful," she adds.
KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Eastern Cape, Limpopo and the Northern Cape are among the provinces that have concluded marking ahead of time.
She says mark capturing has begun in KZN, as well as Gauteng, Limpopo, Eastern Cape and Northern Cape – where marking is complete.
"611 capturers have been appointed across the nine provinces. There were two capturers in the Easter Cape that tested positive at the gate. Therefore they also had to withdraw.
