Four suspected cash-in-transit robbers were killed in a shootout with police on Friday morning in the northern Durban township.

Police say the property on Queen Nandi Drive was being rented out and being used as a safe house by the group.

They recovered explosives, automatic rifles, signal jammers as well as Limpopo registration plates.

The local Community Policing Forum's Mbuso Makhathini says Friday's police operation has brought some relief to residents.

"We could no longer sleep freely at night because of the crime levels.

"Even the arsenal used to carry out these crimes - we’ve never seen it before."

Makhathini says local homeowners will need to come up with a way to screen potential tenants to not only protect their properties but also to ensure the community is safe.

"Yesterday, two suspects wanted for murder in Zululand were arrested here. They had been hiding in K section for over two months. The community helped the police."
