KwaDukuza municipality slams corruption claims following outage
Updated | By Jarryd Subroyen
KwaDukuza Municipal officials have denied reports that corruption is to blame for a power outage that saw some communities taking to the streets this past weekend.
The municipality's Sipho Mkhize says a faulty transformer is the cause of the problem.
"The power outage was due to a failed transformer which had to be replaced. It wasn't because there was no paying overtime to municipal staff. That was a false statement and we discourage members of the community miscommunicating information," he says.
Mkhize says they will support investigations into a protest that turned violent at Shakashead, on the north coast on Sunday.
"The anarchy and criminal activities that ended up happening - we do not believe that they were warranted to happen. We want to condemn any such acts in the near future as well," he says.
Residents were angered by an unplanned power outage which affected parts of Shakashead, Etete, Malende and Manor Estate.
Four people were hurt and 11 vehicles were damaged when they were pelted with rocks and stones.
Police are investigating a case of public violence.
