Krugersdorp rapes: Accused back in court in September

The State on Thursday confirmed one of the 14 suspects facing multiple charges of rape, sexual assault and robbery relating to the attack on a film crew in Krugersdorp two weeks ago was indeed a minor.

Following the revelation of his age in court on Wednesday, while appearing with first group of seven suspects, the teenager underwent age assessment.


“The investigating officer had to go to the hospital for the age assessment to be conducted, and the results came back. He indeed is a minor 16 years of age,” said the National Prosecuting Authority’s Phindi Mjonondwane.


Meanwhile, the second group of suspects, who appeared in court on Thursday and were aged between 23 and 48, has been postponed to the same date as that of the other group on 28 September for further investigation.

Mjonondwane said they were satisfied with the progress of the case.


“As the prosecution, we established prospects of a successful prosecution against 14 of the more than 80 suspects that appeared in court last week. 


"The additional seven and they are also facing similar charges as the ones that appeared yesterday.”


Accused seven to 18, six of whom told the court they were Mozambican and Lesotho nationals, while one said he was South African, indicated to the court they would be using the services of Legal Aid.


All of the suspects have been remanded in custody.
