Killing of Lindokuhle Cele spark fears within LGBTQ community: Activist

A local activist says the deadly attack on Umlazi musician Lindokuhle Cele has sparked fears within the LGBTQ community again.

Mvuyisi Moguda allegedly harassed the 23-year-old with homophobic remarks before the attack at the K-section butchery on Thursday.

Martin Meyer, an LGBTQ activist and DA member, was at the Umlazi Magistrate's Court where the man accused of stabbing Cele with a butcher's knife made his first appearance on Monday.


Meyer says more needs to be done in the community to protect the LGBTQ community.

"It has become so that we have moved back to a time that we are scared as gay people, as lesbians and as the queer community to walk on the streets."


"Constitutional rights doesn't mean anything if it's just written in paper and not in the hearts of the people of South Africa."


"We need to work together as all communities, civil society and political parties to take away the fear for the gay community. Make us proud again to walk on the streets. Make us not be scared to be who we are," he says.
