Killing of KZN councillor 'alarming': Cogta

The Department of Cooperative Governance in KZN says the sharp increase in attacks on councillors in the province is alarming.

The department has been reacting to the murder of NFP councillor Ntombenhle Mchunu.
Gunmen stormed and shot the 75-year-old in her home in Nongoma on Sunday.
Her grandson, aged four, was hospitalised in a critical condition.
Police are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder.

Thando Biyela, who's with the KZN Department of Community Safety, says MEC Sipho Hlomuka's calling on community members and political parties to work with investigators.
"We also want to unmask those who plotted and masterminded this killing. As a government, we remain committed to enforcing the laws that govern this country. We are not going to allow lawlessness to be the order of the day.
"Hlomuka also urges members of the community to allow police space and time to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure that an arrest and prosecution is effected. He also pleads for the public to assist law enforcement with information that will crack this case."
