Kaunda wants to rope in rights groups for by-laws

eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda says the city would welcome the assistance of human rights groups in drafting anti-crime by-laws.

He's made the call as Durban prepares for the arrival of some 80,000 visitors over the December-January holidays.

 

Kaunda has urged metro police to be tougher on criminals.

"Let us declare war against those who are breaching our own by-laws, to those who want to change the city to be a city of drugs. Let us go all out in full force and ensure that we guarantee safety.

 

The mayor was speaking at the launch of the city's festive season campaign on Wednesday. 

 

"We must not elevate human rights for criminals and not elevate human rights for residents and visitors of this city. Human rights must be equal, so let’s work together. We recognise human rights, but human rights must be for all people, not for criminals."
