Kaunda: Vandalism of infrastructure by striking DWS workers ‘treason’
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has labelled the vandalism and sabotage of essential infrastructure by striking DWS workers as treason.
Municipal employees in the city have been protesting for better pay for the last five days.
On Monday, 13 DSW workers were arrested in Springfield on charges of malicious damage to property.
The work stoppage has disrupted the city's refuse collection and delivery of other basic services, including the provision of water and electricity in parts of Durban.

On Tuesday morning, angry Verulam residents took to the streets to protest against the disruption in service delivery.
Speaking at a post-State of the Province Address event on Tuesday, Kaunda warned there would be repercussions for any worker who breaks the law.
"They are going to face consequences. No mercy at all because they destroyed infrastructure and they are damaging the services of our communities. Stopping access to water and electricity is treason."
