Hundreds of employees protested in the city centre on Wednesday.

The union's regional secretary, Xolani Dube, says they want performance bonuses, more work resources and security.

He says they also want cleaners to be insourced.

"And among other things that we raised in our petition is the senseless killing of workers.

"You would be aware that more than 10 employers have been killed in just one financial year, so that raises alarm for us as workers because we have to provide services to rate person."

"If we are not safe at work, it is the duty of the municipality of the employer to provide safety."

Meanwhile, Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda says they are working on getting a bigger budget to pay workers who are under the Expanded Public Works and the Public Employment programmes.

He was speaking in KwaMashu on Thursday.

"Part of the approvals by the national treasury is the money that relates to neighbourhood projects. That grant also relates to public employment programmes.

"That is R32 million that has been issued, which may take us to December, so we are still negotiating because at the initial stage of the project, we expected the project to cost R200 million, but what we received is R130 million, so we still need more money."
