The mayor spoke at a water and sanitation conference at the Durban ICC on Wednesday.

Kaunda said the city is working on providing reliable water to the areas batting with erratic supply.

There have been several community protests over the lack of water since the start of the year.

Kaunda believes the public is being misled to believe the entire city is battling water supply.

"When you see us on television with people saying there are problems of water in eThekwini, I know what comes first to our minds; it is that everyone in eThekwini does not have water. No, 80 per cent of residents have access to water.

"We are just dealing with the 20 per cent that we want to incorporate with them. We will also appreciate if you can propose other water sources that the city can explore to increase the availability of water."

He also reiterated the city's ultimatum to the striking DSW workers.

"Those who are still committing themselves in the illegal strike we will give them until 4 pm today (Wednesday) to report to work. Those who fail to do so, they must know they are dismissed in this municipality."
