Durban councillor bemoans water, electricity outages

A Durban councillor has expressed frustration at eThekwini Municipality's inability to get a handle on the unprotected DSW strike.

Durban residents are fuming about a water outage that affected large parts of the city related to an eThekwini municipality labour dispute that has disrupted services.

Ward 31 councillor Remona Mckenzie says residents from several areas including Musgrave and Overport have been without water for a week.

"I tried to get a hold of some of the departments, unfortunately, there has been no feedback but one specific official, did advise that it could be the reservoir or it could be sabotage that's going on with the strike so I didn't get exact feedback on what the real issue was."

Mckenzie says power outages have added to their struggles.

"Electricity is the worst in the area because some residents go without it for four or five days and it's mainly caused by the loadshedding that we have. The trip switch doesn't come on and the cable faults that occur. Having no water and electricity is unfair."
