Kaunda assures eThekwini 'ready' for Durban July

eThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda says ample security measures are in place as the city prepares to welcome thousands for the 2022 Durban July this weekend.

He spoke about the city's readiness for the first full-capacity in-person event since the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic two years ago.


Kaunda says the horse racing event is expected to draw over 35 000 people.


"There is a joint operation which includes all our law enforcement agencies. They have surveyed the area. 


"They are now ready to execute their responsibilities. Unfortunately, we can't give you the number of police that will be involved because we need to keep that with us."

The mayor says those in attendance are expected to spend R145 million, with the gross domestic product in economic activity projected to be R362 million.


"The year we have decided to spread the Durban July experience to townships. There will be five townships, venues for holding bets for Durban July so that people can enjoy the races and the fashion from different parts of the city."
