31-year-old Sibonelo Mkhize was arrested soon after the incident.
Little Sadia parents, Shailendra and Lorraine, wept uncontrollable as Judge Esther Steyn recalled the events of the day the Grade Four pupil died.
The family sat together while Steyn went through the testimony given by Shailendra and the officers who assisted him on the day.
The hijacking occurred when Sadia's parents went to drop her 6-month-old brother off with their grandparents.
The court heard that Mkhize and his accomplice, Siyabonga Bulose approached the vehicle and demanded the keys.
Sadia's father said during his testimony that he then fired shots at the vehicle, adding that it could have been one of his bullets that hit his daughter.
Bulose died at the scene.
