Jozini Dam sluice gates to be opened
Updated | By Sandile Bhengu
The sluice gates at Jozini Dam are going to be opened from
Monday to release some water.
The dam, also known as Pongolapoort, is at total capacity following heavy rains.
The Department of Water says the dam level needs to be reduced to 85% capacity for safety reasons.
It says the last time this was done was in 2014.

The Department's Sputnik Ratau says the water release will happen until 13 December.
"The communities downstream need to be vigilant. They must be cautious about the possibility of the Pongolo River rising in their area.
"They need to be aware that we have started the process of receiving water from the dam and this will go on for some time and so in that period we want everyone to be vigilant to ensure the safety of lives and of livelihoods."
