Janusz Walus ‘remains stable’, attacker to be charged

The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed that the inmate who attacked Janusz Walus has been isolated.
He will also face charges for Tuesday’s stabbing incident.
Walus is receiving medical attention after he was stabbed by a fellow inmate on the eve of his release on Tuesday afternoon.
He was convicted of killing then SACP leader Chris Hani in 1993, and is set to be released on parole on Wednesday following last week’s Constitutional Court ruling.
The Department of Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo says Walus is being monitored by the healthcare professionals.

“As the Department of Correctional Services, we are able to confirm that inmate Walus remains stable.
“However, he is being monitored by our healthcare professionals until such time that he is cleared of any form of danger. As a department, we have to ensure that we leave nothing to chance.
“The attacker has been segregated and will be charged criminally because it is a criminal offence to stab and unleash any form of attack on another inmate, or any other person for that matter.”
