Ixopo residents receive aid after being hit by heavy storms
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
Officials in Ixopo's
Ubuhlebezwe Municipality say disaster teams are assisting over a dozen
residents after this week's heavy storm.
"There have been
various types of temporary relief items that were issued to the affected
households. Items such as plastic sheeting, blankets and sponges. There was a
family that was further referred to Sassa for further social
intervention," says the municipality's manager responsible for community
safety, Sihle Nene.
Nene says they're still assessing the storm damage in rural communities and the financial impact.
A man from Highflats, whose home was flooded and destroyed in the torrential downpour this week, has told Newswatch he feels helpless.
He says he was only supplied with plastic sheets to cover his furniture.
Nene says they are working to assist the resident and 17 others affected.

"I can describe the type of nature or the type of damage as extensive structural damage.
"None of the victims were evacuated. We had only one gentleman who was deemed homeless. He has since then sought refuge from a family member.
"We are in the process of conducting the necessary assessments, which will then give us some sort of indication of the required intervention that is required from the municipality."
