Violent behaviour by pupils in KwaZulu-Natal's classrooms has reached crisis levels, says the South African Democratic Teachers Union.

SADTU, the country's largest teachers' union, has been commenting after an Ixopo teacher was stabbed last week, allegedly by a 15-year-old pupil.
It's understood the boy, who failed Grade 9, demanded he be promoted to the next grade. He's since been suspended.

The union's Nomarashiya Caluza says this is the second report of violence since schools reopened two weeks ago.
"Its now like a failing argument that schools and teachers are attacked because there is no security. Remember that the people that come to schools to assault and attack teachers are not only outsiders.
"So this is very unfortunate and de-motivating on the side of the teachers who have to wake up every day and go to school and teach, only to find that we are being disturbed by these incidents."
