Israel's most-wanted gang leader arrested in Gauteng

Interpol has arrested Israel's most-wanted gang leader on South African soil.

The international crime police organisation worked with local officers and intelligence officials to track down the 46-year-old fugitive and seven others at a property in Bryanston, north of Johannesburg on Thursday morning. 

 

"During an early morning take down operation, the team pounced on an identified address in Bryanston and found the suspect and seven others, 12 firearms including five assault rifles and seven pistol , US $40 000, three suspected stolen motorcycles were seized," says national police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe. 

 

Interpol issued a Red Notice seven years ago for the suspect, said to be linked to the criminal group 'Abergil Organisation' in Israel.

Mathe says the gang he allegedly belongs to deals in drug trafficking, extortion and other criminal activities. 

 

"He is a wanted suspect in Israel for conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder. 

 

"In 2003 and 2004 ,this wanted suspect allegedly placed an explosive bomb underneath a vehicle of a man in Israel in two separate incidents. As a result of the first explosion, five people sustained serious injuries but all miraculously survived. 

 

"In the second incident, the suspect also attempted to do the same with the same victim, where he placed a bomb on top of a vehicle. In this incident, three people also sustained serious injuries."
