IPID to prove deaths of 5 wanted suspects in northern KZN

Police watchdog IPID says it has launched a probe into the circumstances leading up to the deaths of five suspects killed in a shootout with police in northern KZN.

Police say they received intelligence about a vehicle that the suspects were travelling in, in the Eshowe area on Saturday.

 

Provincial spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says officials located the vehicle.

 

He says they introduced themselves and the suspects attempted to flee. 

 

"The driver of the suspects’ vehicle lost control and the vehicle collided with a fence and before the police knew it, they were under gunfire from the suspects. The tactically astute task team officers returned fire and a shootout ensued. 

 

"Five suspects were fatally wounded during the shootout and two firearms were found in their possession."

He says they were wanted in connection with a murder case. 

 

"The deceased suspects were sought in connection with a murder of a 31-year-old man who was shot and killed in the morning of 1 July 2023 at a taxi rank in Ndlangubo area in Eshowe."
