eThekwini Municipality officials will meet with Buffelsdraai residents this week after a mass shooting at a local landfill site.
A man was shot dead and 17 others were injured after a violent confrontation broke out between waste pickers and security guards last week.
It’s understood that people were scavenging for food, plastic and scrap metal when the incident happened in the north of Durban.
The city has since moved to close the site.
Municipal spokesperson Lindiwe Khuzwayo says they will hold a mass community meeting at the Buffesldraai Sportsfield on Wednesday.
“A joint decision was taken by all the parties in attendance to hold a mass community meeting on Wednesday, 19 July to find a lasting and amicable solution to the challenges.
“While the landfill site remains closed, customers are advised to use the Illovo Landfill Site to dispose of general waste. The Illovo landfill site is at D982, Illovo farm.”
