Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is investigating after a man, who was allegedly part of a gang that robbed an elderly woman in Pietermaritzburg, was killed in a shootout with officers.
Authorities say about seven men targeted the woman on Sunday while she was withdrawing money at an ATM at a petrol station in Edendale.
It's understood community members caught one of the suspects and assaulted him.

The police watchdog says his accomplices dragged him away from the crowd, put him in their getaway vehicle and sped off while firing shots.
Police officers who were monitoring a funeral nearby were alerted and gave chase.
