The president flew into Durban on Friday morning to survey the impact of days of arson, looting and other violence in KwaZulu-Natal.

With a broom in hand, he spoke to a group of volunteers that were busy cleaning on Umgeni Road, home to multiple businesses that were trashed by looters.

"Thank you so much for all the work."

Earlier, Ramaphosa went on a walkabout in KwaMashu, where Bridge City Mall was also looted and vandalised.

He told journalists it is clear that the unrest had been planned.

"There are instigators, there were people who planned it, coordinated it and our intelligence services and our police now got a line of site what actually was happening here with the instigation, coordination and planning and we are after those people."

Ramaphosa also reflected on the dire impact of the violence.

"It is most unfortunate that so much damage has been to the country and people have lost their lives that is the most concerning issue and here in KZN alone, 95 people have already lost their lives.

"There has been complete destruction of the livelihood of people. People are now going to go forward having lost jobs and the economic damage that has been done including just looking at our country from both internal investors as well as external investors."
