Inkosi gunned down outside KZN traditional court

An Inkosi has been shot and killed in northern KwaZulu-Natal while waiting outside a traditional court.

Inkosi Maxwell Mandlakayise Nxumalo was shot dead in the early hours Tuesday morning in the Nazareth area in Alfred Duma Local Municipality.


Police say the 71-year-old had been standing outside a traditional court when his attacker came out of the bushes and shot him.


The Ekuvukeni police have opened a murder investigation and is looking into the motive.


The Traditional Affairs Department has condemned the killing.

"We wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the family of Inkosi and the communities under the Nxumalo Traditional Council," says spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila.


"We call upon law enforcement agencies to apprehend those that are responsible for this act of cowardice.


"The department of Cogta has been actively engaged with the issue of safety concerns raised by Amakhosi.


"We have been working together with law enforcement agencies and sister departments to come up with ways of dealing with concerns raised by Amakhosi."
