Infighting could strip branches of voting rights at eThekwini ANC conference

By the end of this weekend, we should know who will be elected to lead the ANC in the eThekwini region.

The two contenders for the region are former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede and metro speaker Thabani Nyawose.

The party's eThekwini Region Elective Conference is currently being held at the Inkosi Albert International Convention Center.

Political analyst Imraan Buccus says it's also come to light that two big branches of the ANC may not be allowed to vote this weekend, due to infighting in the party.

Buccus says these are wards 1 and 91 in Hammarsdale.

"Two of these branches not being able to vote is significant. In ward one in 2017 in the run-up to the conference that ward was the largest in the country with 4000 members and it now has under 1000.

"And the other large branch, which is now 1008, is currently the biggest branch in the country. eThekwini is a region with about 100 000 members so numerically significant, even for our national politics in terms of going to the elective conference.

"With all of these fragmentations and problems I think as we approach the elective conference, eThekwini will not be as powerful as it was in the past."
