The party has said it won't oppose the former Durban mayor's nomination for eThekwini chairperson but added she will have to abide by the ANC's step-aside rule.

Gumede's supporters are confident she'll be elected despite her corruption trial in July.

Political analyst Imraan Buccus says many have questioned her decision to contest the position of chairperson.

"The African National Congress has pronounced that people with charges over their head need to step aside."

"But I think that Gumede may very well be stepping out to make a political point that she does indeed enjoy majority support in the region even though she's announced that she might step down and who knows, she might very well if she does win.

"But I think she's setting out to make a point. The lines seem increasingly blurred in eThekwini about who is going to win."

The ANC's three-day conference will take place at Durban's ICC.

The Kokstad Youth Centre is the venue for the Harry Gwala Region.
