Rahul Jaiswal was denied bail two weeks ago by the Umhlali Magistrate's Court following his arrest in Ballito.

He's in custody over series of charges of conspiracy, drug distribution, money laundering and importing controlled substances.

It's alleged the 40-year-old is the leader of an organised criminal group operating in India, distributing and misbranding prescription drugs for U.S customers.

Jaiswal has been living here with his South African wife.

The National Prosecuting Authority's Natasha Kara says the US government has made an extradition request.

"In denying him bail, the court found that Jaiswal has not demonstrated why he's release in bail would be in the interest of justice.

"The case returns to court in January 2024, for a free enquiry into the extradition request. This legal proceeding highlights the international nature of criminal activities and the cooperation between countries in addressing transnational crimes."
