The experts from various organisations will look into the impact of the leak and work hand in hand with Environmental Affairs.

"All these teams are working together to see the impact and also to see what needs to be done," says MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube.

Dube-Ncube says the clean-up operations are continuing at the river in Bellair and the Durban Harbour.

Crews have already removed thousands of litres of oil from the water.

It's believed thieves who were trying to steal fuel from the Transnet pipeline caused the leak.

Transnet's pipeline executive Tanuja Naidoo says preventative safety measures have been beefed up along the 3 800km stretch.

"There's quite a bit of measures that been put in. We are also going to be putting in prevent controls which we will be rolling out soon - with the first one being completed by 31 March because it is very important that we prevent perpetrators from getting to the assets of the country."
