The Independent Examination Boardcreleased the 2020 matric results on Friday, which show that the pass rate is slightly lower than the 2019 pass rate of 98.82%.

Learners who were registered for full-time study accounted for 12 024, while part-time learners accounted for 1 139.

IEB further reports that 88.42% of the cohort achieved entry to degree to study at universities, 8.14% qualified for entry into diploma study, while 1.51% achieved entry at the Higher Certificate level.

The 2020 IEB results come after a challenging academic year for learners across the country as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

CEO  of the Independent Examinations Board, Anne Oberholzer, says the impact of COVID-19 saw several learners withdrawing for the year and postponing the completion of the academic year to 2021.02.19

Oberholzer further adds that some schools within the IEB managed to make a smooth transition to online teaching while others experienced challenges.

"It is interesting to note that the hard lockdown had differing impacts across schools within the  IEB.

“Some schools were able to make a smooth transition to online teaching and learning as  they had the resources available and in fact, had already been using them in the normal course of events.

"However, many schools could not deploy an online teaching model, either because the school or the majority of learners did not have adequate resources. To fulfil their commitment to teaching their learners and not be defeated by the pandemic, teachers in these situations reverted to traditional distance education strategies.”

Basic Education Minister Angie Mothskega will announce the matric results for public schools on Monday, 22 February and those matrics will get their results the next day.

The closing date for the application for remarking is 3 March 2021 and the results from remarking will be released on 26 March 2021.

The closing date for learners who qualify to enrol for the supplementary examination is 16 April 2021.
