Eradicating
pit toilets in KwaZulu-Natal is one of the provincial Education Department’s
key objectives for the remainder of 2018.
The department says it has prioritised ablution facilities at all schools in KwaZulu-Natal, as they give pupils a sense of dignity.
President Cyril Ramaphosa called for the issue to be addressed across the country earlier this month.
Provincial HOD, Enoch Nzama says they will focus on the rural schools were proper facilities are non-existent.
“In KwaZulu-Natal, 1,337 pit latrines have to be removed. We are currently working on designs and we will embark on an implementation programme soon,” said Nzama.
The HOD says they will also work towards providing water and electricity to schools.
Officials gathered at the new Hibiscus Primary School near Margate for its official opening yesterday.
