Impendle community ‘stunned’ by granting of bail to two suspected rapists

The community of Impendle, west of Pietermaritzburg, says it is stunned by a local magistrate's decision to grant two child rape suspect bail.

The six-year-old girl's stepfather, aged 36 and an 18-year-old uncle were released on R300 bail each after they made a brief appearance in court on Tuesday.
Community members and social workers demonstrated outside court, calling for justice for the little girl who lives with her grandmother.
KZN Social Development's Mhlabunzima Memela says they are extremely disappointed the pair's been given bail.
"It is a very disturbing thing that the court has resorted to giving these guys a bail of R300 while dealing with such a serious case. These guys had actually violated the rights of the child.
“It is shocking that they were given bail. We were expecting that they will remain in custody until the matter is completed and sentenced accordingly."
In a separate case, a 31-year-old man accused of raping his eight-year-old stepdaughter was denied bail by the same court.
The case has been postponed until 19 September. The department says both children go to the same primary school.
