IFP's election success attributed to 'charismatic' Buthelezi

A political analyst says the Inkatha Freedom Party's (IFP) impressive performance in Monday's local government polls can be attributed to the party's longstanding history of engaging with the people of KwaZulu-Natal.

As the official opposition in the province, the party's taken the lead in more than a dozen municipalities, making it the biggest performer in KZN.

The IFP's claimed early victories in Ulundi, Nongoma and former president Jacob Zuma's hometown of Nkandla.

Analyst Protas Madlala says the strategy of using founder Mangosuthu Buthelezi as the face of its election campaign has paid off.

"They had dedicated this election to their founder, who is a very charismatic person.

"Also, the splinter group, which is the NFP lost its leader and it's very weak, it has been embroiled with internal fights.

"The ruling party has been morally found questionable in terms of corruption."
