IEC says it's prepared for local government elections

The Electoral Commission says after holding 150 by-elections in the past six months, it's prepared to preside over safe local government elections later this year.

Several political parties have been calling for the October polls to be postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The IEC held a press briefing to announce whether the elections will go ahead, given the current conditions.
Chairperson Glen Mashinini said: "The Commission is satisfied that it is possible to conduct successful elections. The Commission is also confident that the special Covid-19 protocols and measures to be put in place for the elections will provide adequate safeguards."

He says parties have been able to use other strategies of campaigning under the new normal.
The Commission has appointed former Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke to evaluate conditions conducive to free and fair elections.
"I would like to thank the commission for its faith in me to provide a report to assist it and other key decision-makers in the electoral process to make decisions which were well informed and well-considered as they navigate these uncertain and challenging times."
