IEC fails in goal to count 90% of votes by Wednesday
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has failed in its goal to count 90% of the votes in the local government elections by Wednesday.
The IEC is yet to shed light on why it failed in its self-determined goal to count most votes.
The electoral commission’s CEO Sy Mamabolo has indicated on Tuesday evening that discussions were held with Eskom to isolate centres where vote counting is underway after load-shedding was implemented.
It’s unclear at this stage whether stage 2 of the rolling power blackouts resulted in only 58% of the votes being counted as of Wednesday morning.
This while the ANC is struggling to gather a majority vote in South Africa’s metros, with the party gathering a 45% support in seven of the eight metros.
The lowest support for the governing party was reported in the City of Cape Town where the ANC achieved a mere 13.2%.
In Gauteng, the ANC is the front-runner in Johannesburg with 35% and in Ekurhuleni with 38%.
The battle for Tshwane is heating up with the ANC not far behind the DA who have gathered 35% of the vote.
The ANC is struggling to obtain more than 45% in eThekwini, Mangaung and Nelson Mandela Bay.
However, the party is set to win an outright majority in Buffalo City with more than 61% of the vote.
