DA wins first KZN municipality

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has claimed victory in the uMngeni Local Municipality in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands.
Party leader John Steenhuisen was speaking at the results centre in Pretoria late Tuesday afternoon.
"It is with great pleasure that I can announce that the Democratic Alliance now governs its first municipality in KwaZulu-Natal with its own majority - the uMngeni Local Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal."

The DA has campaigned extensively in the municipality, saying it was ready to govern.
It held one of its rallies in Howick last month.
On Sunday, it announced that the Midlands municipality's deputy mayor, Nompumelelo Buthelezi, had left the ANC to join the DA.
Some of the roads in the municipality are in a state of disrepair, an issue that many residents have long complained about.
Other service delivery issues include the supply of electricity.
