The Phoenix woman facing charges of attempted murder after allegedly assaulting her 4-year-old daughter earlier this year wants to be allowed to visit her child.

The woman and her boyfriend appeared in the Verulam Magistrate's Court, north of Durban for the fourth time this morning.

Video footage of the attack sparked outrage across the city.

The little girl was beaten unconscious, apparently after stepping on the man's toes.

Both suspects were arrested in February and are out on R3,000 bail.

They both arrived at the courthouse with their families this morning but did not sit together before proceedings.

Wearing a black dress, the 25-year-old woman only looked at the magistrate.

The 20-year-old man also stared straight ahead.

The State prosecutor told the court she has been informed that the mother is requesting access to the child.

Current bail conditions are that neither of the suspects are allowed to see her.

The matter has been postponed until the 14th of June for the finalisation of investigations, the couple is still not allowed to see the child.

The little girl is being cared for at an alternate place of safety after being discharged from hospital.

The boyfriend had previously agreed to the conditions that prevent direct or indirect contact with her.
