Hundreds of people have marched through the Durban CBD, demanding an immediate end to what they say are violent evictions from informal settlements in and around the city.
The march, being led by shack-dwellers movement - Abahlali baseMjondolo, took off from Curries Fountain this morning with marchers expected to hand over a memorandum to eThekwini officials at Durban City Hall.
The organisation is also demanding jobs, land, housing, basic services and dignity for all.

Some of the marchers have told Newswatch their basic human rights are being trampled on - accusing eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede of ignoring their calls for help.

"The mayor has promised that she'd do a change. She hasn't made any changes up until now," one participant said.
"We are part of Durban but we know nothing about what is going on. She came to us and she promised us that she will be working with us from now on. She told us that the government of today will make a difference in our lives. As we are here today, nothing has happened," another one said.
