Howick serial rapist begins serving life sentence

A Howick serial rapist, sentenced to life imprisonment, has begun serving the sentence.

The 32-year-old appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court on Thursday, where he was convicted on four counts of rape between 2008 and 2012.
Siyabonga Mokoena also received three 10-year sentences for robbery - all of which were committed in the Howick area.

According to a police statement, Mokoena would terrorise the victims in the area, threatening them with knife and raping them thereafter.
He would also robbed them of their cellphones, cash and other items.

In the last incident in June 2012, Mokoena approached a woman who had been hitch-hiking, raped and threatened to stab her.
He was arrested in 2012 for housebreaking, and has been linked to multiple crimes dating back to 2008.
