Home Affairs DG explains Gupta citizenship to Parliament
Updated | By Puseletso Petersen
Home Affairs Director General, Mkuseli Apleni has told MPs that some members of the Gupta family were issued 'naturalisation' certificates because they qualified for them.
Speaking in Parliament, Apleni outlined the process of issuing a certificate to those who apply for naturalisation.
The EFF made allegations earlier this month that then Home Affairs Minister, Malusi Gigaba waived the residential requirements for the applications of Ajay Gupta, his wife, mother and two sons granting them early naturalisation. Apleni says the claims are not true.

"Mr. A Gupta has not been naturalised. He is still a permanent residence holder. When people have been naturalised - that's when the certificate of naturalisation can be issued," he said.
He says the Guptas have conditional citizenship.
